Rachael Carson essays
Rachael Carson papers OK need to know whether the pesticides that were being splashed close by your homes would, in later years, cause malignant growth? That was Rachael Carsons proposed reason: to make the overall population mindful of the unsafe pesticides utilized in and around their neighborhoods. Carson expressed that concoction treatment of soils prompted the obliteration of useful organic species, and that such demolition brought about awkwardness to the biological system. In human wellbeing, Carson called attention to the presentation to or ingestion of different items, each at independently safe levels, taken together, could prompt medical issues (mental and malignancy). In spite of endeavors by the concoction business to excuse Carsons science, her work is credited with starting the American natural development, the production of the Environment Protection Agency, and the 1972 prohibition on DDT. I dont accept that Rachael Carson had any shortcomings in her line of contention. She expressed things that were clinically demonstrated through broad research that she finished up while laboring for a long time at the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The main issue with her contention is that she was only relatively revolutionary with all the data she was revealing about the synthetic substances that were being utilized. Individuals didnt consider their wellbeing, they just idea how the pesticides were going to support them. All the individuals needed to hear was the positive parts of horticultural synthetic substances. Her language was placed in straightforward terms and was directly to the point with her announcements and realities. She did this to permit the overall population to have the option to assimilate the data she accommodated their advantage. I likewise accept she put her data in straightforward content so she would not put on a show of being a smarty pants researcher attempting to get acclaimed for her examination. Rather she needed individuals to feel as she was just putting out the data for the people groups advantage. We are s ... <!

They may take our lives
They may take our lives⦠DID YOU KNOW? Liechtenstein is less than 5 percent the size or Rhode Island. However, it is only the 4th-smallest European country. Wikipedia also describes Liechtenstein thusly: Mountainous, it is a winter sports resort, though it is perhaps best-known as a tax haven. Poor Liechtenstein. It actually looks beautiful, and I might have to check out Vaduz or something this summer (since I have an internship with Bayer in Germany). But this entry is about the Boston Celtics. Im Tau Beta Pi social chair, which means I get to plan things that I always wanted to do and then go to them for free and pretend that Im promoting socialization among TBP members. Now, I have not always wanted to go to a Boston Celtics game, but it just seems like something you should do while youre going to college in Boston, like heading to Wellesley or running the Boston Marathon or checking out the MFA. In fact, the only reason I even planned this was because Shyam 07 kept asking the other social chair and me, offering advice on how to get tickets, which games would be best, and other such things. Then he found out that he had the MCATs next week and decided to spend the entire four-day weekend studying organic chemistry and whatnot. MORAL OF THE ENTRY: You can be pre-med at MIT, but youll have to give up going to discount Boston Celtics games. Im not the greatest event planner in the world, or even in the suite in which I live, but we got to the game and got our tickets distributed without a hitch. One thing that you should know, however, is that you cannot bring bags to Boston Garden. Dont do it! Dudes, the pre-game introduction looks totally like something out of The Running Man, except without Richard Dawson crazy plate metal spike armor driving an electric death toboggan. I guess I just havent been to a basketball game in, well, ever. The lights are mostly low, with a few are flashing in a miasma of neon, and then they have a ring of flat-screen monitors all around the stadium that display crazy wave patterns as the players are introduced. It was enthralling, but then for the rest of the game the ring of monitors is just used to display advertisements for discount lumber companies in 360 degree surround-sight. So much for the way of the future. As for the game, it was okay. Basketball is not so much my thing, but I appreciated being there and cheering for the Celtics and watching them make the occasional 3-pointer and exceed the fouling limit or whatever. The Celtics did end up losing by about 5 points, thoughit seemed like their adversaries, the New Jersey Nets, were much better at making foul shots, and that the Celtics kept fouling them over and over. My own basketball experience extends all the way back second grade, when I was a proud member of the Susquehanna Township Youth Basketball Association. My team, the Red Rockets, came in fourth out of eight, losing to the dastardly White Team in the semifinals. I think I scored, at most, 2 points or something the entire season (in foul shots, no doubt), but since the average game score was about 18 12, I dont feel like I achieved too far below the league average. Anyway, one thing that happened during the game that was pretty cool was that during a time out, they brought out Lucky and The Slammers, two trampolines, and a giant ramp. The Slammers all lept off the trampolines and did wild, acrobatic, flipping dunks. Then they ran back, assembled a giant slingshot stretching the entire length of the court, and used it to launch Lucky, apparently some sort of roller-blading leprechaun, down the court, off the ramp, into mid air, through a 360 rotation, and well, as they say, nothing but net. It was truly a wondrous spectacle, and its a wonder that they can organize all this defiance of death in a scant two minutes. And I wonder, dont the players ever get distracted by this when theyre supposed to be listening to valuable strategy handed out by their coaches? Another thing that happened was that they had a tic-tac-toe game during halftime for some airline. This is depicted above. Take my word for it. The concept was that you had to shoot free throws, and for each free-throw you made, you got to run back to half court and made. It was really exciting, but might have been even more so had the players employed any amount of strategy. Im no game theorist, but it takes only an extra three seconds to figure out where you want to place your piece, and it seems like proper placement could hinder the opponent and make it so that they need to make two or three more free throws than they otherwise would. This is what the winning board looked like: Well, I guess its pretty stressful to be playing tic-tac-toe for free airline tickets in front of thousands of people.

History And Theories Of Counseling - 827 Words
Among the many issues that face the counseling profession, counseling culturally diverse clients is one of the most challenging. Becoming culturally competent is a road that all counselors must travel in order to be truly effective. In order to successfully travel that road, counselors must have multicultural training with the intended destination being culturally competency. Cultural competence requires trainees to become aware of their own world views, their assumptions of human behavior, their misinformation and lack of knowledge, and most importantly, their biases and their prejudices (Sue Sue, 2016). Because of the complexity of working with populations from diverse backgrounds, a broad range of counseling theories and research is needed. Impact of History and Theories of Counseling Cultural blindness still plagues the counseling profession because a lack of a theory on cultural oppression and its relationship to the development of world views. Counselors tend to respond according to their own conditioned values, assumptions, and perspectives of reality without regard for other views (Sue, 1978). Since past concepts of counseling and psychotherapy have particularly favored the Euro Americans in origin, most of the philosophical assumptions and values are strongly endorsed by Western civilizations (Sue Sue, 2016). Evaluation Of The Corrections Officers At The Allen County...
The ability to apply acquired knowledge in a situation outside the typical educational structure often results in exceptional learning. The experience of working with the corrections officers at the Allen County Juvenile Detention Center helped me to think critically about the application of justice. There is much that can be said specifically about the correction officers and some of their attitudes and actions. They do contribute to the atmosphere, however, changing other aspects such as the rules or the actual building has been my focus. Throughout this reflection, I will cover a typical work day with some commentary on the procedures and the environment intermixed. Working at relatively the same time each day caused a rather repetitious experience and there were only minor changes day to day. I will conclude with some notes about how justice ââ¬Å"looksâ⬠at the JDC along with some suggestions. There are two pairs of corrections officers on duty at least from three until eleven at night. The pairs are always one male, one female. I believe this is because of dealing with gender specific situations like showers. There are often other people who worked specifically with the treatment wing during my time. The detention center has one wing for those who need to serve time for an offence and one wing for those receiving treatment for their health. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of Arabian Nights or any similar topic only for you Order Now With the help of a storyteller she tells the him a story every night and stopping every dawn with a cliffhanger and refuse to continue until its night time again. This prevents the Sultan to kill Scheherazade and the stories she was telling has lessons and will cure the madness of the Sultan. The stories she had told were Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, The Tale of the Poor Hunchback, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, The Sultan and the Beggar and The Three Princes. When Schahzenan heard about the Sultanââ¬â¢s madness and thought of it as his weakness, he took advantage of it. He formed an army to battle with him in getting the throne but he failed because Sultan Shahryar was cured by Scheherazade with her stories. The Sultan fell in love with her and because of the morals of her stories they defeated the army. At the end, Scheherazade was telling the whole story to her children. ANALYSIS 1. Give three traditional, cultural and customary practices shown in the movie. Explain its significance. A. The remarriage of the Sultan after the death of his wife or to pass the throne to a sibling. This can be considered a tradition because this practice has been done a long time ago. Almost all royal families do this. This is an important tradition because this speaks of loyalty and sincerity of the king or the sultan to his position. Marrying again shows that he is dedicated to his position that he does not let his emotions conquer him. That even he is grieving to the death of his former wife; he doesnââ¬â¢t mind it because what more important is his people and not his own self and own happiness. He is not willing to give up the throne because he knew it might affect his people and their daily lives. When the leader changes, adjustment of the people becomes difficult. Many would not agree and many will be against it. A good leader knows this well that is why he gives good decisions. B. The performance of an exotic dance to celebrate a victory. This is a cultural practice for this shows the culture of a certain group. In the movie, in the part about Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Morgiana, the love of Ali Baba performed a dance in celebration of their victory. It is a victory for defeating the enemies. This is significant because this presents the true picture of a group. It shows what the group is, what do they do and how they make-known their culture. It is therefore important because this will be the way that they can be recognized and appreciated. That they can show to all that they also possess a rich culture. In just a simple dance number, every movement, the music, the steps, the costume and the emotions talks about something, it talks about a story which is about them and their tradition. C. The offering of a dowry in asking a princess for marriage. This is a very known practice ever since for in ancient stories every man who wants to marry should offer something special and costly to the woman and the family. This is also considered important because this shows respect and assurance to the future of the couple. This just represent that the family of the woman can be at peace that they can give their child to a trustworthy man. And this is also important because this gives a man the opportunity to present himself and prove to be a gentleman. 2. Give three to five representations of human character and how these human nature shown in the movie. A. Courageous Courage is the ability to face difficulty and this trait is possessed by Scheherazade. She was willing to risk her life just to save her fellow women from the mad Sultan. Even she was a little nervous of what she had decided, she face the challenge with great courage and bravery, letting her fate decide what will happen to her as long as she pursue her plan. B. Wise This trait is possessed by Aladdin when he snatched the lamp from Mustappa. He used his skills and took it as an opportunity to bring back the lamp to his owner, himself. Even pick-pocketing is a bad habit, he still used it in a useful and good reason. He did it because he knew, Mustappa has evil plans for it. C. Oppurtunistic This negative trait is possessed by Sultan Harun Al-Rashid when he always plays a prank with the beggar, Amin. He took advantage of Amin because he thinks he is weak and that he could have fun using him. But at the end, because of his bad trait, he faced his consequence and that is to be killed by the person he belittled before. D. Loving This is presented by the three princes, they showed how much they love their father even at first, they always compete and quarrel. Even they always do this, their reason is always, they love their father and they will do anything for him. When they were requested to bring back a special thing to their father, they exerted effort and time just to have it. And also because of the love they have for their parent, the three of them learn to rule the kingdom with peace and harmony. E. Pessimistic Sultan Shahryar is pessimistic. This was shown when he was betrayed by his wife. Because of this experience, he blinded himself that all women are trying to kill him. He generalize that women has bad intentions against him. He did not try to see the brighter side of life, that what had happened to him has a purpose and reason, instead he let himself sink to his emotions and this had conquered his mind that is why he became mad. 3. Give three universal truths drawn from the movie and its application to personal experience. A. No man is an island. Even if how strong a person is, how brave he is and how unbreakable he is, he might not admit it, but he still needs a shoulder and a hand for support. I am not this kind of person but I think this is one lesson that might get from the story. I observe this with others, who shows the world they do not need help but when problems come they hopelessly aiming for it. Nobody survives alone, everyone needs somebody because as I can see, you cannot talk, cry, laugh and tap yourself. Itââ¬â¢s much better to see someone who are happy when you are happy and wipes your tears when in pain. For short, itââ¬â¢s best when you have true friends. B. People who do bad things suffer the consequence of their action in the end. I always believe in this line because every action done has a corresponding consequence, may it be good or bad, it always depends on the former action. In my experience, what I did was, I didnââ¬â¢t ask permission that Iââ¬â¢ll accompany my cousin at the park. We went there and played in ââ¬Å"monkey barsâ⬠. Unfortunately, I fell and broke my bone in the arm. And I really put this lesson in my mind. I also saw this in people who engaged in bad activities like pick-pocketing. They might benefit in that act but the so called karma, it might not strike them, instead their loved ones suffer for them. C. Everything happens for a purpose. This lesson may be applied in every situation and in any kinds of problems. Whatever happens, there is always a reason, we may not see it easily but as time passes by, we tend to realize why it had happened. Many problems come and sometimes we fail, but we should be open minded and realize that bad things happen because it will be exchanged with much of happiness. BEST PART OF THE MOVIE For me, the best part of the movie is when Scheherazade conducted her plan to save the women and to rescue the Sultan from madness. In the time that she told the Sultan stories in order for him to heal. I like this because it showed ââ¬Å"girl-powerâ⬠. It showed that even a long time ago, women had also out win men. That in a simple act, she had changed a very big thing. In this part, it showed that women are wise and courageous. I am very pleased and as I see it, I canââ¬â¢t resist feeling very proud of her and us, her fellow women. It showed that we can also be strong, that we can also stand and conquer something. It can be respect, power and appreciation of others. Itââ¬â¢s brings me to an inspiration that I can also be like her, to have the courage to face difficulties. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. When watching the movie, the viewer should listen and take notes of the lines being uttered by the characters. This is because, these lines give inspiring thought to its viewers and it can be applied to some situations in each lives. 2. When watching, try to see yourself in the situation or in the characters because there is reality in their every action. There is truth in what they are doing because it can happen in a person in certainty. How to cite Analysis of Arabian Nights, Papers

Should Internet Have A Tax Essays - Sales Taxes, Economy
Should Internet Have A Tax? In 1998, retailers sold nearly $8 billion goods and services to consumers over the Internet, or on-line, while business to business online commerce was valued at an estimated $17 billion. Business weekly magazine (June 22, 1998) predicted that Internet commerce would increase the U.S. gross domestic product (GPD) by between $10 billion and $20 billion annually by 2002. They argue that imposing new Internet taxes, at least during the next few years, would bog down the Internet's growth and stunt a sector of the economy that is currently flourishing. For now industry leaders say it is important to build consumer confidence in the Internet by refraining from imposing taxes or other regulatory barriers that may deter people from shopping on line. Internet retailers must charge a sales tax only if the company has some kind of physical presence, such as a warehouse or an office, in the state where the customer is buying the item. Otherwise, companies do not have to add the sales tax to the purchase price. In 1997, Sen. Ron Wyden introduced the legislation that developed into the Internet Tax Freedom Act. The ITFA called for a moratorium of approximately six years on the taxation of Internet transactions, access, or communications. Wyden called the moratorium a time out period that would give the Internet the opportunity to continue to grow. The goal of the legislation was to give lawmakers and Internet industry time to figure out a national taxation policy. Many businesses, he says, would be scared away from the Internet if they were burdened with the responsibility of monitoring and enforcing a thicket of conflicting sales taxes imposed by various states and municipalities. Indeed the potential loss of tax revenue for states and municipalities is one of the biggest concerns. Unlike the federal government, which does not impose a sales tax, states are heavily dependent on sales taxes to raise revenues. Sales taxes comprise 49% of tax revenues collected by the states, while state income taxes comprise only 33%, according to the federal statistics. Critics of the ITFA say that if states municipalities are not permitted to collect taxes on Internet transactions, they could lose much needed revenue that helps pay for government services such as highway construction and public education. Others say that not collecting sales tax from the Internet is inherently discriminatory since businesses that do not engage in electronic commerce must still charge sales taxes. It is fundamentally unfair that Main Street retailers should be required to collect a sales tax while Internet and mail order vendors can sell the same goods and not be required to collect a sales tax , argues Utah Gov. Michael Leavitt. Once consumers and businesses become accustomed to tax-free shopping on the Internet, there may be a backlash against attempts to impose sales taxes when the moratorium ends. Government should impose a tax on all items sold over the Internet. The simplest and easiest to implement, would be a flat rate that applies to all states. I think that if there is no tax collected from these sales, each state will start to suffer from lose of revenue that helps pay for some of life's necessities such as roads, education, and law enforcement. I think that Congress knew that there was a problem and by putting a moratorium, it would give them time to come up with some ideas. But by the time they come up with ideas it will be to late. If they do enforce a tax on Internet sales, people will either pay it or start going back to Main Street businesses, then we have a problem because Internet will no longer have the same sale volume. If they do not enforce a tax, I think that the Main Street businesses will either shut their doors or go to the Internet for their sales. In the latter event they will probably still shut their doors and move to an office building. Why have a h uge store that they no longer need when they can run everything from a computer. I think government should put a tax on Internet sales. Bibliography References Coy, Peter. You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet. Business Week (June 22, 1998) p. 130
